It’s the end of an era.

2005 Cracker Jack

When the Nationals arrived in town, they arrived with a “bang”, signing Jose Guillen, Vinny Castilla, and Cristian Guzman. With Cristian’s deal to the Rangers, I feel like the Nats are finally closing the door on the Jim Bowden era, and thank God for that.

2004 Absolute Memorabilia Auto

2004 Absolute Memorabilia Auto

Man, this guy was EVERYWHERE in sets in 2004. It seems to have been based on the strength of a .324/.386/.412 first part of 2003 with High-A Brevard County. But was it meant to be? The guy was a sixth-round pick, after all.

2004 Bazooka

2004 Bazooka

Advanced to AA in 2004, at the age of 25, he went .270/.357/.381 and earned a promotion to the majors.

2004 Bazooka Red

2004 Bazooka Red

In 14 PAs with Montreal, he had no hits and four strikeouts. He returned to AA in 1995 and hit 273/376/355 between AA and AAA. But no callup.

2004 Bowman

2004 Bowman

He never came back to the majors, and seems to be out of baseball now, but there is an interesting twist to this: he seems to have pitched in a few games in 2007 and 2008. He was decent in 2007, but blew it in 2008. Now, it was probably just blowout games, but a tantalizing thought: what if he’d pulled a reverse Ankiel?

2004 Cracker JackĀ #61
Position:
SS
Bio/Summary: I actually remember the OC’s time with the Red Sox in the latter half of 2004 best; not surprising, given that he was part of that “magic” Red Sox team, and a key contributor at that. Since then, he’s been an average-at-best contributor, one of those guys you plug in at SS and forget about. Someone we could have used at SS the last few years, in other words. I kind of wish he’d stuck around.
How Did I Get It?: A pack of 2004 Cracker Jack.
Did You Know?: He is the brother of Jolbert Cabrera and son of big league scout Jolbert Cabrera, who was reponsible for signing Edgar Renteria for the Florida Marlins.
Rating: 7/10 – This is actually one of my favorite Cracker Jacks, and I’m not entirely sure why. I like the more realistic contrast around the hands as compared to the more brushed look of the face, so maybe that’s part of it.

Nationals Star: Cristian Guzman

2005 Cracker Jack #CG
Category:
Nationals Star
Position: SS
Bio/Summary: Guzmania! I’ve written about Guzman before, about how he really blew it his first few years here in DC, then slowly improved his image while getting injured over and over again, so I won’t repeat myself. Instead, I’ll say that I had a feeling Guzman could be something special…I had watched him at the plate over the years and thought he had the ability to adjust, even if his OBP is pretty lousy. It’ll be interesting to see how he does now that he’s back from his latest injury.
How Did I Get It?: Won it from an eBay auction.
Rating: 7/10 – I liked the 2005 Cracker Jack set, and I’ve always been a sucker for bat cards, so finding this was nice.
