2010 Upper Deck Masterpieces Ryan Zimmerman

But…there is no 2010 Upper Deck Masterpieces! There is now, thanks to Beardy over at The Mojo Beard. Beardy is taking requests for the set, and so I sent in a picture of Zimmerman in a UVA uniform that I’ve wanted on a card for years. Lo and behold, he provided, with a parallel.

The whole set is turning out great, I definitely encourage you to go check it out. And Upper Deck – take note and make these things!

Back to the Land of the Living / Trade with the Middle Child

Well I’m finally starting to feel better after two solid days of hell. I’ll spare you the details, and just give you two words: food poisoning. I think today was my recovery day, but it may have been worse than yesterday.

Still, today was redeemed when i went to check the mail. Guess what I found?

Some recipes from a friend. Awesome, but not the subject of this entry.

Nope. I’m talkin’ ’bout Giant Jeff Reardon.

Or is that Giant, Jeff Reardon?

Look at that freaking thing! Now, when you don’t have a want list and you pull off a trade, you run the risk of getting doubles (which, frankly, I’m okay with), but I have to admit I have never been graced by Giant Jeff Reardon.

Giant Jeff arrived as part of a package from Rockies card blogger extraordinaire The Middle Child. And I have to say, she nailed it. I’m definitely going to be adding a lot of new cards to my Nats and Olerud albums.

Something like my first 2010 Topps card of the year (I just haven’t had much interest in the set this year, but I may go back and get the team set now):

This guy's been around so long it's odd to see an "RC".

And my first 2010 Upper Deck:

I totally can't tell what team this is. For reals!

AND my first 2010 Bowman (geez, do I look behind the ball or what):

And it's a gold, too!

Know what else?

Giant Jeff Reardon.

mm-hmm

But speaking of Expos, they weren’t left out, either. Check out the 96 Ultra Izzy Alcantara card:

This is my first Alcantara card. No idea why, but I'm stoked.

There were a lot of other Expos, but I’m going to be greedy and save them for some future posts, where they’ll be relevant. Now, on to the Oleruds!

I have a pretty sizable Olerud collection (800+ cards), so I’m always curious to see what people will send me and how it fits into my collection. Amazingly, she hooked me up with five Oleruds I didn’t have from the mid-to-late 90s, including:

1998 Stadium Club. Looks like Sweet Spot, doesn't it?

1997 Donruss

And three more, including a super-sweet 98 Pinnacle. Thanks, Shellie! I hope you like the cards I sent your way. Oh, yeah, and:

That's right.

Zimmerman Infield Power

2008 Upper Deck Infield Power #RZ
How Did I Get It?: A trade.
Rating: 5/10 – What an odd insert set. The pose is okay, I guess, but of course the 09 UD does it better…and it’s obscured by so much busyness and uglyness here that it’s annoying.

How Did I Get It?: A pack of 2009 Upper Deck.
Rating: 8/10 – Better pose than the Topps, especially given how great Zimmerman is with the glove. I also have to give props to seeing Nats park here.

How Did I Get It?: A pack of 2009 Topps.
Rating: 7/10 – I like the shot enough, but it’s a little frustrating not to see his face. I also have to admit that 09 Topps is growing on me.

How Did I Get It?: Won it on eBay.
Rating: 10/10 – I love this card so much. I’m kind of lukewarm on game used stuff lately, but the sheer beauty of this one overwhelmed me. I like the classy top half with the photo. Now, I’m not sure I understand WASH as opposed to NATS, but whatever. I’m not going to complain…too much.

Nationals Star: Jose Vidro #11

Vidro 03 Topps

2003 Topps #8
How Did I Get It?:
Pack of 2003 Topps.
Rating: 5/10 – You know, I’m really on the fence about the 2003 Topps Design. On the one hand, I think it has somewhat of a classic feel, with the diamond inlaid and all, but at the same time…I don’t know, maybe it’s the color scheme – it’s kind of bland. I do really like the 03 Gold versions, so it could just be the color scheme. Either way, I think this card is a fair representative of the 03 set – not too exciting, but not too dull.

Vidro Pro Sigs

2004 UD Diamond Pro Sigs #15
How Did I Get It?: Box of 2004 Pro Sigs.
Rating: 3/10 – I liked the Pro Sigs set when it came out, but the years have definitely shot its luster for me. I don’t think the design is very good at all (who thought obscuring the bottoms of their feet was a good idea? Vidro looks like a weird drawing here), and the photography is only so-so.

Vidro Total02

2002 Topps Total #353

How Did I Get It?: Pack of 2002 Topps Total.
Rating: 7/10 – this is one of the times I’ll give a pass to a picture of a player’s back. I like it – the stretch, the framing…it’s a nice shot on a nice card.

Vidro Hernandez

2005 Upper Deck #278 W/Livan Hernandez
How Did I Get It?: Pack 2005 Upper Deck.
Rating: 6/10 – 2005 Upper Deck is another set that I’m on the fence about. I don’t know if I like the design or not – but I do like the combination of players here, and the color balance.
