EBay Week: Day Five

Okay, so the guy I was worried about came through after all, even if I have some quibbles over the delivery method. Let’s start, however, with another arrival:

2010 Topps Tribute

There, now I have a Ryan Zimmerman from each of the 2010 high-end Topps issues. I may try to score a GU/Auto from Triple Threads, but I’m generally not a huge fan of this stuff. I mean, for God’s sake, the sticker is on crooked. Ah, well.

The last thing that I was waiting for was an assortment of cards from a seller on eBay. Most of these ran between 2008 and 2010, base cards from a guy who probably broke some boxes, with a patch auto included. For the price, it was a good buy. Here’s the patch auto:

2009 Donruss Elite Extra Edition

I had actually never heard of Holder until I saw this card for sale, but I did a little research on him and learned that he was a surprise Nationals pick. I don’t know if he’ll ever make the majors, but I dig the hell out of this card. I like the collegiate patches concept a lot, and it’s a nice auto.

Of course, there was also a lot of base and some parallels. Like this:

2009 Donruss Elite Extra Edition

Yep, guy obviously broke at least one box of Elite. I got a couple of the Storens, and I was happy to receive them.

2010 National Chicle

The lot also included a near-complete team set of National Chicle. Score! It also included this sweet Walter Johnson:

2010 National Chicle

But that’s not all! He also included this sweet 2010 Bowman Blue Cristian Guzman:

2010 Bowman

And the last Bowman Chrome prospect I needed from the 2008 issue:

2008 Bowman Chrome

As well as a 2009 Unique Adam Dunn (I’d never heard of this set before):

2009 Topps Unique

He also completed my 2010 A&G Team set (minus the minis):

2010 Allen & Ginter

And, finally, a mess of Topps Finest:

2010 Topps Finest

So, yeah, overall, I’m pretty pleased, and it was a nice week of pick-ups. I’m definitely going to focus more on singles than packs from here on out.

Ebay Week: Day 4

Okay, well, let’s take a look at a few things I picked up as trade bait because, hell, they were reasonably priced.

2007 Absolute

Yeah, it’s “event-worn”, but it’s still a pretty damned sweet patch. I may just hang on to it.

Tristar Prospects Plus

This one was 99 cents, so I went ahead and grabbed it. It’s actually a pretty nice-looking auto, if only he signed his first name.

Again, these are both available if someone wants them.

So I guess we’ll see whether there’ll be an entry in this space tomorrow. Still waiting on a few items. I have my fingers crossed.

EBay Week: Day Three

Unfortunately, a lot of cards that I ordered has still not shown up, so this party may be cut short if they don’t show up tonight. I have a few more items to post, but I’m frustrated with this guy…anyway.

2008 Upper Deck Signature Stars

Alberto Gonzalez was another player that I hadn’t been able to find an auto for. I was stoked to find this one, and the sticker’s actually not so bad, except for that little bit that bleeds over onto the photo.

2010 Topps Chrome

Storen was on my must-have list for 2010 autos. Unfortunately, it seems that a lot of these chrome cards are smudging, as this one definitely was unsmudged when I bought it. I blame on-card autos on a chrome for this, so there’s not much you can really do. I’m still glad to have something from Storen.

And, of course, my Leaf set goes into this pile. I haven’t scanned anything from it, but we’ll see cards from that set soon enough.

EBay Week: Day Two

Woot, more cool stuff arrived yesterday in addition to what I already had, so let’s continue to look-see…

2010 Triple Threads

Another score from the Chrome replacement purchase. This is apparently a “sepia” parallel, according to the numbering scheme. I was struck by a few things, 1. how much smaller it was than I expected – not just the card itself, which is standard size, but the swatch and the photo of Zimmerman. I finally get why people complained about the pic size, 2. it’s a lot shinier than I expected. Definitely takes a hallowed place in my collection.

2005 Leaf Limited

I picked this one up as a “replacement hit” for a group break I signed up for with Thorzul back in September. I got a base Jose Guillen card out of that, so I thought I’d get a GU from that set. It’s actually part of a patch, which is kind of hard to tell here, but it’s made of a different material than a jersey swatch. Only one color, but still cool.

2005 Studio

Josh Karp is one of those weird guys who barely played for the inaugural team. I’m not even sure if a lot of them have autographed cards, and I thought that about Karp until I saw this. When I see this, though, I see a lost opportunity. Imagine an on-card auto with that background. How sweet would that be?

Speaking of on-card….

2007 Topps 52

Speigner has been one of those elusive autos, too, but no more! And look at this thing – the auto is in just the perfect place, on-card. I love it. Speigner may not have done much for the team, but it’s soo worth it. Oh, and it was sandwiched in between two ’08 Baseball Heroes cards, one of which was this:

Nice. Big thumbs-up for that.

Weekend Pickups

I mentioned in several posts this weekend that I busted some Topps Value Boxes…four, to be exact, as I was looking to get the entire Chrome set that comes exclusively in the set and was lacking only the Ruth at the end of the day. This was the also the first time I’d gotten Topps Million Card giveaway redemptions, so I was giddy about those.

Here’s some of what I scored in the boxes:

Didn’t get to scan the Ruth card yet, but yes, I have the entire set now. And I’m very pleased with it. I’m a complete refractor whore, so I knew these were a must-have, especially with a National involved.

I also got a “hot box”, comparatively. The following all came from one box, the one with the Strasburg:

These copper cards are kind of cool, but the edges chip VERY easily, so they’re going to be incredibly condition sensitive as time goes on. But yeah, that was a pretty great box.

My other copper was a Paul Maholm:

I also got a big handful of Turkey Red, always welcome:

All in all, I give the Value Boxes an A+. I feel like I got more than $15 worth of material in those boxes, and the chrome cards are a nice addition. I’ll eventually cover my Million Card Giveaway stuff, but I’m in the process of trying to convert what I got to Senators, Expos, and Nationals. I have, however, already requested delivery on this card:

1968 Topps

That card began its life as a Jose Vidal 1969, then was transformed into a Denny Lemaster 1967 and ended up here. I’m always happy with a new 68 card! Thanks for these, Topps.

The Newest Addition to my Collection

2007 Upper Deck Exquisite

Oh, yes. Look at thing. It’s a thing of beauty. One of these days I really need to feature my GU/Auto Zimmerman collection.

Expos Auto: Milton Bradley #3

2005 Prime Patches

I was shocked to realize I’d never featured this card on this site before. I won this on eBay late last summer, and always meant to get around to it, but I guess the site went dark before I could get to it. I remember getting it for ridiculously cheap and feeling like I’d gotten one hell of a steal. The significance of 7/19/00 is that it was Bradley’s MLB debut. I think it’s weird that they didn’t make a note of it anywhere on the card – why have him sign it that way if you’re not going to feature it in the card somehow? My only guess is that it was for an idea that didn’t pan out.

By the way, he went 3-for-5 in that game. Auspicious debut!

Expos Auto: Claudio Vargas

2002 Select Rookies and Prospects

This is another auto that I pulled from a repack box, though at the time I wasn’t collecting Expos, so I just tossed in a card holder. Vargas never really lived up to what was expected of him, but he was serviceable up until he got injured. Ever since then he seems to have kind of been inconsistent, bouncing from team to team. He looks to have been good for Milwaukee last season, but absolutely abysmal this season. Oh, well. This was a pretty great set, and I’d love to try to complete it some day.

Trade with BA Benny

I’ve been in the process of cleaning up and streamlining my baseball card collection thanks to a post by Gellman at Sports Card Uncensored (whose site I love, just by the way) about hoarding versus collecting, so I’ve been participating in lots of trades to turn perfectly good but perhaps unwanted cards into cards that fit my collecting habits. So I offered Mike from BA Benny’s Baseball Card Buffet a trade. I sent his cards off the other day, and yesterday a package arrived from him. Yay! I love a good trade. Let’s take a look at what he sent…

1992 Topps Kids

I had completely forgotten about the existence of this set. Now I have to see how many of these have Expos on them and get them to round out the set!

1992 Topps Gold Winner

This is my first Topps Gold Winner Expo. I’ve been wanting to complete the regular gold team set for awhile, so this gives me a head start on the winner version.

1994 Flair

If you’ve been a long-time reader of this blog, you’ll know I’m a total sucker for Flair. From the quality of the card stock to the high-gloss photos, it’s one of my all-time favorites, so getting one I didn’t have was a real treat.

1996 Pinnacle Summit

Mid-90s Pinnacle is some great stuff, and oddly enough, 1995-1998 are the biggest gap in my collection, so it’s always good to get this stuff.

1995 Topps

Speaking of which…I had no idea Moose Milligan was ever an Expo. How did I miss that? I guess that shows how into baseball I was in 94/95.

2009 Topps 206

This is my first Topps 206 card, and I have to say, I really like it! This is another team set I may end up pursuing.

2010 Upper Deck

Upper Deck did such a good job of disguising Ian that I didn’t even recognize him at first. It took me a minute, that’s for sure. Still not feeling the 2010 Upper Deck set, but I will eventually pick up the team set. Maybe sooner rather than later.

2002 E-X Game Essentials

I love the EX set and it’s awesome to get a GU from it. This one really meant a lot to me. And finally…

2007 Topps Update Highlights

An Austin Kearns auto! I wasn’t expecting this one at all. Thanks a lot, Mike, and I hope you enjoy the cards I sent your way!

Autographed: Jim Palmer

2003 Donruss Signature Series

Absolutely one of my favorite cards in my collection. I’m a Jim Palmer collector to begin with, and finding a card with a signature referencing the Cy Young Palmer won in my birth year was…yeah. I won this in an auction back in 2005, and had debated for quite some time during my last run on whether I would feature it on the blog. In the end, I had to go for it, and haven’t regretted it since. What a great card, even if it is a cut sticker.
