Paul Ad Applebee was drafted by the Nats in the 10th round in 2009 out of the University of California-Riverside, where he served primarily as a starter, compiling a 13-7 record with a 4.22 ERA with 119 strikeouts in 165 innings and a pretty good 1.7/6.5 BB/K ratio (throwing out an atrocious first year). I guess the Nationals wanted him for his control? Not to mention he’s a lefty, which gives him something of an edge. Either way, he’s performed decently, continuing to show that impeccable control in three stops from Rookie league to A-level Hagerstown, where he’s playing this season, although at 22 and playing in A ball as a reliever makes his chances of getting to the Show pretty distant.
On a personal level, I have to admit I was completely unaware of his existence until I pulled this card last year, and only learned more as I researched his stats. I’m still a little baffled about why he got this rookie card, as he seems like organizational filler, but hey, there you go.
