Senators #15: Darold Knowles

Darold Knowles

Darold Knowles
1971 Topps #261
Position: RP
Bio/Summary: Darold Knowles was a fairly reliable reliever for the Senators from 1967 to 1971; he racked up an impressive 27 saves in 1970 (while going 2-14 with a 173 ERA+), and hung in there in 1971, saving another 9 games total and managing a 94 ERA+. Could have been better, but could have been worse. He was dealt to Oakland in May with Mike Epstein for Frank Fernandez, Paul Lindblad, and Don Mincher. He was a great setup man for Oakland while Fernandez played a total of 18 games for Washington, Lindblad played in 43 games (albeit good games), and Mincher played in 100 games with a 141 OPS+. Not a terrible return, but certainly not looking very long-term, were they?
How Did I Get It?: Part of a Senators lot on eBay.
Did You Know?: Knowles helped the A’s get to the 1972 World Series, but missed it with a broken thumb.
Rating: 5/10 – Here’s a rarity for an older card: a young player who actually looks young. I like the design of the 1971 set, and he looks like such a hopeful young guy at Spring training, embodying the hope of Spring. Or something like that.
