Failed Prospect #6: Tavo Alvarez

Tavo Alvarez
1993 Fleer Final Edition #88
Bio/Summary: Tavo Alvarez was one of those prospects that wasn’t expected to do great things, but perhaps be a #3/#4 type pitcher. Given that the Expos were in pretty good shape back then, that might have contributed to the delay in his development (despite being pictured here, he didn’t make his ML debut until 1995). Once he got there, he did himself no favors, either, going 1-5 with a 6.75 ERA. He was bounced out of baseball after 1996, despite going 2-1 with a 3.00 ERA. Injury casualty? Sort of. He was never the same after a calf muscle injury in 96, and struggled all his career to keep his weight down.
How Did I Get It?: Bought the 1993 Fleer Final Edition when it came out.
Did You Know?: Alvarez pitched in the 1999 Pan American games.
Rating: 7/10 – I liked the 93 Fleer design, and despite a mediocre subject, I like the photograph here. Of course, I can’t help but wonder what it would look like cropped a little differently.
