Former Expo: Spike Owen

1989 Upper Deck #717
Expos Lynchpin
Position: SS
Bio/Summary: Traded from the Red Sox with Dan Gakeler for Luis Rivera and John Dopson (neither of whom I recall in an Expos uniform), Spike was never a huge standout for the Expos, but he did field well enough to hold on to the shortstop position for four seasons. Spike’s highest BA with the Expos was .269, though his best power years were with the team; he hit a career-high 8 with the team in 1991.  Defensively, though, he really shone in an era when shortstops weren’t expected to hit: he led the league in fielding percentage twice and set an NL record with 61 consecutive errorless games at shortstop.
How Did I Get It?: Bought a 1989 Upper Deck High Numbers set from eBay in 2003.
Did You Know?: Owen was a coach for the Round Rock Express from 2002 to 2006.
Rating: 7/10 – The classic 1989 Upper Deck design with a nice color scheme from the uniform down to the background. This was always one of my favorites in the high numbers set, visually.
