1989 Upper Deck #5

Is that the ivy of Wrigley in the background? If I squint my eyes I almost believe it is, and that that’s a Cubs player in the background. Obviously Otis just struck out. Poor Otis. This is one of those shots that’s boring at first glance, but the more you look, the more detail you soak in. Not to mention you’d never see a shot like this before Upper Deck, for better or worse.

Spike has shown up a lot on this blog for some reason, and this is another one of those high-numbers cards that I’ve already covered, so I don’t have a lot to say about him right now.

Obviously another shot taken at Wrigley. I wonder how many of these shots were taken on the same day? You know, I remembered Johnny Paredes, I really did, but I had no clue what kind of baseball player he was, so I had to look him up. Turns out, apparently not that great a player. He had a .187/.282/.242(!) line in 35 games for the ‘Spos in 88, got injured, and returned briefly in 1990 for the Tigers. The thing is, Paredes had had a high average in the minors, but absolutely no power, and I suspect that’s what did him in at the majors.

Hey, it’s a shot from a game that’s not in Wrigley! And it’s an action shot. This looks to be another Chavez Ravine shot, actually. So we have at least three distinct venues for the Expos shots now – LA, Chicago, and what I’m guessing is Spring Training based on the red jerseys.

Looks like another Dodger Stadium shot. I never liked this card back then, not sure why, and I still don’t like it now. I think it’s just that Perez looks like one of the aliens from Mars Attack. Check it out:

Spooky.

Perez was an alien, wasn’t he? I loved that bloop pitch he threw occasionally. I know he struck Eric Davis out at least once with it.

  2. Nat,
